I find that in my travels, many people - including myself at times - put on a mask that disguises what they are feeling. Often we act socially acceptable instead of how we feel like acting, and while this is a good thing if it prevents violence, it is still a mask. Honestly, I find that religious people are some of the worst - and that is why I believe that Christians should be different. Christianity is not merely a religion, but a relationship and sometimes relationships aren't easy and fun every day.
I had the opportunity to interview 10th Avenue North and I found them to be one of the most refreshing, honest bands that I've ever talked with. Jeff, Mike, Rueben, Brenden and Jason were kind enough to hang out with me even though they were exhausted as they were a last-minute fill in. Take a listen and find what our Christian duty is, and how life can get ahead of us. There is no defeat, only a chance for a better tomorrow. Listen to the interview here. |

One of the highlights of YC Alberta 2010 was of couse the band lineup. This year, bands included Bluetree, Matt Maher, Leeland, Manafest, Jason Upton, Thousand Foot Krutch, Disciple and Skillet. Bluetree hails from Belfast, Ireland and they led many of the worship sets and even mingled with the students and staff in attendance over the weekend. It was great to have a chance to talk to Aaron Boyd and even do a personal photo “quest” for him. For those unfamiliar with Bluetree, think of them as a cross between U2 and Hillsong United. They have a great sound, serve a Great God and have great things planned for the rest of 2010. They will be at Rock the River later this summer. Another band that headlined this year was Leeland. They have a mellow sound and have hearts set of fire for God. Not only did I manage to enjoy their worship sets, I got a chance to sit down and talk to them about youth, vision, ministry and how they stay focused when so busy and doing the same songs over and over. Catch the audio interview by clicking here. Make sure you check out all of our YC Alberta 2010 pictures here. |

James 3:3-6 3 We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. 4 And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. 5 In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. 6 And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. [b] In points of our life we've all had things said to us that were hurtful; as well we also had said things to one another that didn't make the other person happy too. I've been on both ends of the spectrum. Sometimes we do things intentionally to be mean and hurtful, and sometimes we may say something in a joking way that hurts a person’s feelings without even realizing it ourselves. Our hurtful words and or actions toward someone especially if you’re saying something constantly to hurt them can even push friends away leaving you with no friends. Just like a fire, fires burn up everything. In this example reminds me of a kid that I work with at my job. I work with kids with special needs and at my job you do things with them and have fun that will build them up and help with whatever they're lack of need is. This one kid that I work with isn’t the most encouraging kid that I know; almost everything he says is negative, whether or not he's joking or had a bad day. Once in awhile he'll say something nice but it’s very likely, and a friend that comes there he enjoys hanging out with doesn’t like being around him very much anymore because of his negative behavior, especially his comments. It’s unfortunate that we have to keep them separate for some of the day until he starts changing his behavior around. An interesting acronym that I read in a book Prayers for Daughters that was given to me that may help us remember if what we're saying, will say or have said was good. T=Truthful? Is what we say true about that person? H=Helpful? How does what u say help them? I=Inspiring? Dose it encourage them? N=Necessary? Is it important or appropriate to say that? K=Kind? Was it nice what you said? |

Matthew 4:1-11 The Temptation of Jesus 1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. 2 For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry. 3 During that time the devil[a] came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, 6 and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’[c]” 7 Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’[d]” 8 Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.” 10 “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’[e]” 11 Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus. We live in a world full of distractions and temptations. Everywhere we go it feels like the world is throwing something at us. Even when Jesus was on earth things were thrown His way. Verses 1-11 gives a good example of temptation and distractions and how Jesus over came them. Jesus was told by the Lord almighty to go out into the desert to fast, to go hungry for 40 days and 40 nights. There he was tempted by the devil himself mostly been asked to prove if Jesus was the son of God but also to fall and stumble. He told Jesus he could change the rocks into bread, he could jump off a cliff and survive. He told Jesus “You’re the son of God, you got awesome power to do anything” Satin was trying every which way to get Jesus off track to temp and cause Jesus to fall. Jesus resisted and told the devil NO! and told him this” People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Meaning even though we have food to help us live and grow physically we shouldn’t forget the Word of God and His ways to our feed us spiritually. The devil had also tempted Jesus saying that He could have all of the kingdoms and cities on earth if He worships Satin. Again Jesus chooses not to listen what the devil says tells him off saying to leave, we shall worship only God! Still on the topic of distractions and temptations this chunk reminds us that we need to listen to what God is telling us/spend more time focusing on Him. Like Jesus was in the desert fasting I had decided to go on a famine, a gaming famine for 10 days and just take some time to focus on God’s word on what really matters. I told Ben this and he had also decided to join me with my gaming famine, not only to help support and be accountable, but as leaders we thought we should try to dig into God’s word more and to re-focus our minds spiritually. There were some points that it was tempting to play. Mom doesn’t play the type of games we play, but one game that I play sometimes is similar to Zuma called bubble burst and I’m sitting there watching her play for a bit. I’m thinking, ok this will not help me, and even at one point I almost played my DS, but remembered NO! 10 days are not up yet! Put my DS away! Sometimes it’s hard to get into the bible and focused on God when the world throws distractions our way. We need to every so often put away the things that may distract us and take that time to re-focus on what matters most. It’s not easy doing a famine on your own, have someone keep you accountable and better yet if someone’s doing it with you it’s even better because then it may not be as hard. If Ben and I game famine at different points, I think it would have been a little bit more of a challenge and more tempted to play. Try your best to fill those challenging times with the Word, at the same time remember to give God credit and thank Him that He put that pondering thought on your mind to re-focus from what distracts you. |
